Supporting Your 2020 Vision

By Helen Livesey

As 2019 comes to a close for businesses and SME’s in Lancashire, we thought it would be a great opportunity to look back and reflect on what the past year has brought us and look forward to what we hope to achieve for the year ahead.

Not all business owners allow themselves the opportunity to do this valuable exercise and it really is so beneficial to sit and take stock and look to the future, they don’t call it a tradition for nothing!

We want to take you through the same steps we took our practitioners, to give you the opportunity to do the same and get ahead for 2020. If it gives you the opportunity to go to the gym more, increase your profit, take the dog out for a walk more, it’ll have been worth it.

Reflecting on 2019

Think about the last 12 months and everything you have come up against, fought, battled and won... Write down:

1. Your biggest achievement
2. Your greatest obstacle
3. A note to take forward that you have learned from it
An example of this from Consulting Practitioner David Nelson was:
1. David’s biggest achievement of the year was completing a 26 mile hike back in June for Macmillan Cancer support and raising over £300
2. His greatest obstacle was allowing himself the time to do the things he enjoys
3. A note to take forward was that he is in control of 90% of his obstacles and has the ability to change the outcome

Aspirations and Goals

In this section we wanted people to consider everything they currently aspire to achieve, either in the next 5, 10 or even 20 years. It could be reducing your working days or growing your company by X members of staff, it could be a personal goal like taking on a new hobby or challenge. Write as many down in a list as you can.

Once your list is complete, we want you to look at that list of aspirations and put a star next to the ones that are the most achievable over the next 12 months.
Then write down in order of priority what needs to happen in order for you to achieve those key aspirations.

Make Your Goals SMART

For the final step we want to break these down even further, turning them into the bite sized chunks you need to get started straight away. Following the principles of SMART (see image to the right).SMART

Take 3 goals from your priority list that you can work on in the next 3 months. List each one on a page as a heading and underneath write what you are going to do to achieve it, how you are going to do that i.e. do you need to do some research or speak to someone or buy something? Then finally list a deadline for when you are going to complete it by. Do this for all 3 headings.

See some of our Practitioner examples below:

Example 1-

o Goal – Build a website for ecommerce purposes
o What: Get the ecommerce section of the site live
o How: Start writing the content for each page
o When: Have the content ready to upload by end of February 2020

Example 2 –

o Goal – Complete the 3 peaks challenge 2020
o What: Become fitter and healthier
o How: Start eating better and training at the gym and outdoors on different terrains
o When: Be fit and ready by summer 2020

Your 2020 Vision

This process is a great start to any 2020 plan for SME’s as most of us face the same challenges throughout the year such as struggling for time, spinning too many plates and letting our own head trash get in the way of the things we want to do.

Here’s what Consulting Practitioner Ged Henderson of Henderson News and Media had to say about the session:

“Lots of food for thought in the run up to the new year and a good opportunity to get some thinking done!”

Practitioner Michael Alder of Fused Health and safety said:

“Assisted me to focus on my plans for 2020 and prioritise them for the how and the when”

This exercise gets you thinking about the small and manageable steps you can take now to get your business strategy and plans in motion to drive your decision making and put your growth first, so that when you look back at the end of 2020 you know you did your absolute best!

If you would like to get more time back to work on your business strategy, goals and development why not come and visit us in 2020 and start your year off with a powerful support network cheering you on.
